Workplace Skills & Skills Levy

Challenges to deal with when it comes to skills development in your business.

  • How do you ensure that the training you offer is relevant with real word application?
  • Have you looked at claiming back the cost of training?
  • How do you ensure the training is suited to the individual?
  • Do you have a learning culture?

Workplace Skills Plan (WSP)

The workplace skills plans (WSP) document the skills needs in an organisation and describe the range of skill development interventions that an organisation will use to address these needs.

What is the workplace skills plan for South Africa?

The Workplace Skills Plan (WSP)and Annual Training Report (ATR) help to establish a demand-led skills development system aligned to the needs of South Africa.

When to submit the workplace skills plan to Seta?

The skills year begins on 01 January and ends on 31 December. You should therefore report on training done from 1 January to 31 December and provide your plan for training from 1 January to 31 December for the current year. The due date for submission of the Workplace Skills Plan to the SETA is 30 April.

The roles of the SETAs

The main role of the SETAs is to construct a framework in which all South Africans, employed or unemployed, can develop their existing skills, learn new skills, acquire qualifications, and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economy.

SETAs have the function to monitor the quality of education and training in their various sectors.

What is Skills Levy Funding

A Skills Development Levy (SDL) is a levy imposed to encourage learning and development in South Africa and is determined by an employer’s salary bill. The funds are paid to the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and are to be used to develop and improve the skills of employees.

When you submit your Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and an Annual Training Report (ATR)a percentage of the levies that you paid will be paid to the company as a mandatory grant.

HRPT assists businesses to document the skills they need and describes the range of skills development interventions that the business will implement to address these needs. We also assist with the Workplace skills report to enable you to implement education, training, and development initiatives and make use of learnerships and internships, and available funding initiatives.
